Disciples’ Kitchen, an interdenominational ministry, has been in operation at Second Presbyterian Church on Commerce Avenue for about 10 years.. It began with lunches served free-of-charge on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Today, about thirty churches and 250 volunteers serve hot lunches between 11:30 and 12:15 to forty to seventy-five patrons on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays every week. Some of these churches serve breakfast on Saturdays between 10 and 10:45 at Basic United Methodist Church on the corner of Fifth Street and Delphine Avenue. The diners are hungry for food but also for fellowship with friends and church servers
Every six weeks a team of volunteers from First Pres plans a hearty lunch menu, buys the food, cooks, serves, and cleans up. Take-out meals and peanut and jelly sandwiches are also popular with the clients. Second Presbyterian Church provides one of their members to lead each church group, to read a devotion, and to bless the food. Their church also provides lemonade, tea, coffee, condiments, flatware, dishes, paper products, and a brand new dishwasher. Therefore monetary contributions are gratefully accepted.
