Many people in our community appeal to churches when they get in financial trouble. For many years the pastor has had funds specifically for this purpose. The pastor spends this money at his discretion, hence the name of the fund. Footwashing has to do with humbling ourselves and serving the Lord as he served us. The major source of income for this Fund is the interest from our Shenandoah Presbytery Discretionary account.  Years ago our pastors consulted with individuals and determined whether or not to help and how much to help. In recent years we mostly have cooperated with Salvation Army and helped folks at its request. Salvation Army frequently solves a large financial problem for a family by getting help from several sources. We usually spend about $200 a month in $50 increments. Our church has had a long standing tradition of allocating the loose offering on the first Sunday of each month to this fund.
